Divorce After Abuse

Did you know that even after a domestic abuse divorce is not a guaranteed thing? That’s right. Even after spousal abuse divorce is a long and expensive process that most victims cant afford.. The way that divorce works is it is part of the supreme court meaning that one would have to pay for lawyers. That could equal around $3,000-6,000. That is simply too much to pay to be free of a life of torment and abuse. In many cases regarding families lawyers are free, such as custody battles, these are cases that are tried in family courts. Divorce is however not covered in this.

Even after the problem of expensive lawyers there is the problem of serving the spouse the divorce papers. Many women (and some men too) get forced into living tied to someone whose memory can only drag them down. This happens because often times the abuser can go into hiding and until they are served the divorce papers they remain married. This unfair considering the fact that this gives the abuser power over even their divorce.

Now there are ways around these problems. A few lucky survivors can always escape. There are programs to help and lawyers that take pro-bono just to help the women in need, but this is not enough. The state needs to find a way to provide for and help these women. They should not make their lives harder.
